“Update – August 25, 2008: I inspected the Fernandina Beach project on Sat. In my observation the constructed portions of the fill project did remarkedly well.As we had predicted(and hoped) much of the wave energy was dissipated in the transport of the overly wide berm(via the compensating slope) to the toe of the template.Hence, all the storm did was pretty much equilibrate the template.Interestingly there was no associated scarping in the process. The beach foreshore exhibited a nice rolling slope.Even on Sat the seas were exceptionally high--but no classic erosion scarp was developing. There was very little evidence of overtopping which is reflective of very little surge during the event.
The attached photos were taken by City staff during the blow.I will send you a series of Sat pix under separate transmission.
The un-nourished shorefront south of the termination of fill did retreat during the storm. Most surviving overwalks were pretty much stranded from the remaining duneline or remnants thereoff. We will need to wait for the COE and contractor survey profiles to get an idea as to how much sand was potentially lost and whether or not add'l fill will need to be added to the project.
All in all --pretty exceptional performance
here for the constructed fill. ERIK
PS I will fly oblique aerials tomorrow of both ends of the island...including the Fort.
